December Meeting Notes

Willow River Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild Meeting Minutes – December 13, 2018

Thank you to everyone who brought food for our Christmas party pot-luck.  There was a lot of yummy dishes that were enjoyed by all.

The meeting opened with a motion by Linda Andert to accept the November minutes as sent and was seconded by Tracy Vail.

Old Business
Retreat - The theme this year is “Remember When.”  The dates for the retreat this year are January 7-13, 2019. Thursday (10th) – Sunday (13th) is full, but this is still room for any days Monday (7th) – Noon Thursday (10th).  If you are interested in coming any of those days, contact Hope.

Apron Quilt block – all retreat participants are asked to make a quilt block (see Hope for the pattern), everyone’s name will go into a drawing and the winner will get all the apron quilt blocks. Bring aprons to share/display – if anyone can bring a clothes rack to display aprons, please contact Hope

Rooms will be assigned, names will be on the doors when you arrive.

The retreat committee has many fun things planned for the week/weekend. 
If you have special dietary needs and have not already let the committee know, contact Hope as soon as possible so she can let the retreat center know.

Beanie Babies Challenge - Pick a paper sack with a Beanie Baby inside, make a quilt that goes with the beanie – approximately 40”x55” ; Bring the completed quilt with you to the February Meeting (both Beanie and quilt); we will be donating them to a children’s and/or a local hospital. If you need a Beaning Baby, let Barb know.

Dues - Need to be paid - $15 no later than January, 17, 2019.

Treasurers Report - Ending Balance reported -  there are still some outstanding monies to be paid for the retreat.

New Business
January Meeting has been changed to the 17th (due to retreat) 6:30 pm

February Meeting – there was some discussion about doing something for Valentine’s Day, but overall there didn’t seem to be enough interest, so we will hold our regular meeting.

Hostess Sign up was passed around, if you weren’t able to sign up at the meeting, please sign up at the January meeting.  Thank you!

Programing - Officers will be meeting tonight to go over planning for 2019.  We already have a good start to the year (a few things changed during the officers meeting from the guild meeting) and we now only have 2 months without anything planned – August and November.  If you have any ideas or have class you would like to teach, please let one of the officers know.  It would be nice to have the whole year planned by our meeting in January.

Some suggestions for classes are: Fussy cutting, Flying Geese, Self-binding, Mitered corners, Pre-cuts, Panels, Yo-yo’s, etc…

Discussion about inviting other guilds to our meeting when we have an outside presenter coming. 

Red Wing Quilt Show – This will be the first weekend in February (2nd & 3rd) and is always a fun event to attend.  We will discuss at the January meeting carpooling and going together as a guild.

November Meeting Notes

The meeting was called to order by President Eileen Van Dyk.  Secretary report ready by JoDee.  Barb moved to accept the Secretary’s report, seconded by Linda A.  Treasurer report given by Bridget.  Meg T. moved to accept the Treasurer’s report, seconded by Cindy P.  

Upcoming program – Dec 1st.  Barb Rogers presenting the class at the Star Prairie Town Hall on County Road C.  The class starts at 9 am.  If you want extra help, please contact Barb Rogers for extra help on Friday evening.  The class will be from one of the following books – Diamond Magic, Stack & Whack, and One Block Wonder. – You will need to have your own book.  The fabric that works the best is a very busy fabric and the repeats should be 12 to 18 inches wide. 
Quilt Show –See sent notes for amounts
Budget – See sent notes for amounts
Caring Quilts – brown bags were made up with Beany Babies in the bag with instructions to make a small quilt to go with the Beany Baby and these will be delivered to hospitals.
Retreat – There is a quilt block if you are going to retreat along to make an apron if returned.  Handouts of information to retreat were given out.  Sign up sheets for bringing mats and special diets for Oak Forest which will accommodate any special menu needs – sign up tonight if possible.  Towels and bedding supplied. 
Old Business – Christmas project and Community Service projects – Patsy moved we make pillowcases for Grace Place; Linda A seconded the motion.  It was also suggested to bring Ziploc bags, cups, napkins, or small storage containers to give to Grace Place as well, as they do not have anything to use currently for handing out snacks, etc. to the residents. 
New Business – Tracy Vail’s husband will be transferred up north for his job and Tracy will be moving in February.  She will no longer be available to be our President Elect.  Please be thinking about nominating someone for this position or stepping up to volunteer for it yourself.  January’s meeting falls on the Thursday evening of our quilt retreat in Frederic.  It will be looked at to move the meeting evening to possibly the following Thursday evening.  Someone will be checking with the church to firm up the date change.  More to come next month on this change. 
A motion was made by Cindy P to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Sue P.

Next meeting – Dec meeting will be Dec 13th at 6 pm for potluck.  Bridget is hostess – if you will please bring the beverages for the evening.  We will be playing the dice game again this year, so everyone please bring a few fat quarters to be shared for the game.  It was decided on not having a Christmas block exchange this year.  Also remember to bring pillow cases and supplies for our Christmas donation to Grace Place.  Show and Tell for this month is Holiday projects, please bring to share need not be completed to share……

September Notes

The meeting was held on Sept 13, 2018.  The meeting was called to order by President Eileen Van Dyk.  The secretary report was read.  Cindy Peer moved to accept the meeting minutes from August.  Seconded by Mary Lou Curtis.  Approved.   The treasurer report was given by Bridget.  Patsy moved to accept the treasurer report.  Lynn Rude seconded it.  Approved.  Bridget stated she will be sending out a spreadsheet with further breakdown of the budget later this month. 

Charm packs were on the table at the meeting.  They were free for the taking as long as you bring back to the next meeting something pieced together from the charm pack.  You may add any additional fabric to the charm pack that you wish.   It will be fun to see what returns next month. 

Committee Reports
Quilt Show – Patsy stated we need to people to sign up for working the show and to help set up the show starting on Friday at 12:30 at WITC.  Betty’s sons will be delivering the quilt racks to us at WITC at that time.  Please bring hammers, pliers, step ladders, and vice grips to help with setting up the racks.  The food court will be open on Sat. only from 8-2.  We also need quilting props to decorate at the quilt show.  Please bring them on Friday as well.   Barb will be collecting and displaying the Paint Chip Challenge.  The class on Saturday at the show had 12 people signed up so far.  Eileen encouraged everyone at the meeting to sign up for the class as she felt they would really enjoy it.  The Raffle baskets proceeds will be divided between THUG (Totally Humble Under God – for homeless teens in St. Croix Cty) and the guild voted on the other charity to be the Back-Pack Program.  The was moved by Cindy Peer and seconded by Barb Rogers.  Betty Schmit brought up the fact of our quilt racks for the show are heavy and are aging.  She volunteered to look into lighter racks for the future.  She will report back with more information later. 

Caring Quilts – Linda Andert picked up a bunch of caring quilts that were quilted by Jean at Topstitchery.  They need to be bound yet.  Some of them were taken home by members to complete the binding.  The caring quilts are not housed at JoDee Johnston’s house in case you need to pick any up for delivery. 

Retreat – There is still openings for both the weekend and weekday retreat dates.  The 2nd half of the fee for the retreat is due at the October meeting. 

Old Business – none
New Business – next month’s quilt guild meeting will be election of Officers for the upcoming year.  There was discussion about the upcoming opening of officers.  The following officer positions are open:
Treasurer – Bridget may consider doing it again next year – Cheri Schmitt may assist
Vice President – programs – Hope is willing to do it another year
President-Elect – Tracy Vail is willing
Secretary – Sue Powers is willing
Thank you for all that are stepping up to volunteer for these positions.  It is very much appreciated. 

Eileen asked us to be thinking about volunteering to do a demo to share with the guild and what month you would be willing to do it.  Patsy moved to adjourn the meeting.  It was seconded by Lynn Rude.
Show and Tell was enjoyed by everyone.  Thank you to the hostesses Cindy Peer, Judy Brust, and Mindy Newman. 

Next month – Election of officers – discussion topic of Year End Evaluation – Program with Pre-cuts and Show and Tell made from pre-cuts – Hostess is Cheri Schmitt – if anyone is available to assist Cheri with being a hostess, please reach out to her – please note there is a quilting retreat that falls on the same evening as the Oct guild meeting.  In fact, I will be at that retreat, so if someone could please take the minutes for me, I would appreciate it.  My personal email is:  hopefully this will making it more convenient to get the information to me.  Thank you.

August Notes

The meeting was called to order by President Eileen Van Dyk.  Linda Justmann moved to accept the Secretary’s report as written and seconded by Patsy Larson.  The Treasurer’s report was read.  Linda Justmann moved to access the Treasurer Report, Lynn Rude seconded the motion.  A couple of thank you cards were read to the group for caring quilts given out this last month. 2 quilts were tied before the meeting this evening and another 1 was tied after the meeting.  Thank you to all the ladies who helped make this happen.
Committee Reports:
Retreat – half down payment required tonight for the January retreat in Frederic.  Jan 10-13, 2019.  There are multiple options for the retreat this year.  The weekend dates and also weekday dates with the option to add more dates to the weekend if you choose.  There is a large print out for the details of breakdown of the cost for each option.  The remaining balance will be due in October. 

Sunshine – Barb Rogers and Betty Schmit purchased a gift for an upcoming event in Sept.  A card was passed around for everyone’s signature.

Quilt Show – Many flyers and book marks were handed out personally by a few members.  Thank you to all who helped with this much needed advertising of the show.  Signup sheets were available to sign up for all the volunteering that is needed.  This will help the quilt show committee to figure out where we are at.  There will be a raffle of for the show.   baskets for a community charity.  Another sign up for the baskets was available as well.  Please include an itemized list of the items in your basket if possible.   WITC will be available at 1 pm for set up on Friday, Sept. 21st.  The class being offered at the show has a time change to 2 – 4 pm.  There are flyers for this and a signup sheet that is required ahead of time.  There is $10.00 fee for the class for the take home project to be done in the class.  The deadline for the class sign up is Sept 14th, due to having the kits available.  There will be a $5.00 fee for people to attend the class without doing the kits.  Signs will need to be made for this as well. 

Please be thinking of volunteering at one of our upcoming guild meeting with something you would like to demonstrate to the group.  It can be a big project or just a simple trick for everyone to learn from.  Thank you for your consideration.
Show and Tell was enjoyed by all.  Such talent we have in our group!

July Notes

Due to storming weather we had a few changes in the program for the evening.  Barb Rogers stepped up and did a program on Celtic applique as Nancy Maki was not able to attend.  Barb did a really nice job on short notice.  
The County Fair is this week with quilt judging at 9 am on Thursday, July 19, 2018.  This is open to the public for viewing the judging and learning what is involved in the judging.  It goes until approximately noon or after.  
Committee Reports:
Quilt Show – Patsy updated us with what is happening with the quilt show.  Sign up sheets were provided to sign up for when you are able to help with the quilt show.  There are many different ways to be able to assist the show committee.  Please try to help where you can.  

Retreat – sign-up sheets were provided tonight – There are multiple information sheet to sign up on depending when you plan to attend.  There are multiple options this year.  Please see the handouts from Barb or Hope.  If you are planning on attending, please note there is a partial payment that is due at the August meeting.  If you need more details please reach out to Barb or Hope.  
Baldwin Quilt Guild wanted me to share -  The Baldwin guild is taking a bus to St. Cloud on Aug. 21, 2018.  The cost is $30.00.  The will be going to Grubers, Mille P’s, and Noble Quilts.  If you would be interested the contact person is Judy Ziegler at 715-684-3968.

May Notes

Our May meeting was potluck with a guest speaker and trunk show by Mary Hertel.  She was a great speaker and a great trunk show was given with the chance to purchase as well.  She was also going to Jean Potter’s shop the following day for a workshop.  You are able to Google her under Made By Marney.  We did have a short meeting following.  

Committee Reports below:
Quilt Show – Patsy had flyers and book marks to hand out along with the raffle tickets as well.  Please try to sell tickets for the show early and if you need more Patsy and Linda Andert will have them.  We will be looking for more volunteers to help with different items as the quilt show gets closer.  Please be thinking about how you can help.  

Quilt Retreat – Jan 10-13th 2019 3 nights for $165.00 – checks made out the guild this year – First half of the fee due at Aug meeting and the last half due at Oct meeting – there is room for 18 people for the Thur- Sunday timeframe – however there will be availability for Mon-Thursday as well with 2 meals during the weekdays – Mon-Thur with 6 meals for $159.00

June Bus Trip – June 23rd, 2018 – taking a smaller bus – bus leaving the New Richmond Government Center parking lot near Aldi’s at 8 am – Will be road tripping to see barn quilts near the Lindstrom Chisago City area with lunch at 11:00 at the Wagon Wheel – stop at Pin & Needles quilt shop in St Croix Falls – 4:00 pm return – there was still more room available if you want to bring any friends – if you are bringing anyone extra please call Hope at 612-201-2786 so she can coordinate with the restaurant, etc.  
Please note there will NOT be a normal June meeting this month and the bus trip will be our June activity.

We had show & tell with both Farm Girl Vintage blocks and other quilted items.  
I am including the Quilt Show Registration. Hopefully you can make copies for yourself.  You will need 1 form for each quilt you enter into the quilt show in Sept.   And I would appreciate the quilt forms as soon as possible so I can start typing up the slips for the show.  
I also have included an excel spreadsheet with a list of the current members.  Please review the spreadsheet and let me know if there are any additions or corrections that need to be made before I make copies or publish it.

April Meeting Notes

Our guild meeting was held April 12, 2018.  We enjoyed a potluck and a trunk show put on by Bolts of Fun of Thorp, WI.  A panel strips project and collage quilts with layers of fussy cut fabrics were shown along with some fabric shopping. 
The meeting was called to order by President Eileen Van Dyk.  Secretary’s report was approved by Linda A.  Treasurer Bridget gave her report and was also approved.
Show and tell was enjoyed by everyone.
Committee Reports:
Farm Girl Vintage – Blocks were shown, drawings for prizes were drawn – March – Patsy won -  April – Chaz Cypher won
Sunshine Committee – Sue Powers and Linda A. on the committee – Please be mindful if you hear of someone from the quilt guild that needs to be acknowledged and let them know.  There are some guidelines that have been established for sympathy cards and other events to be acknowledged. 
Quilt Show – Patsy reported that the committee had met earlier this evening.  The raffle tickets will hopefully be available in May.  Please be thinking of where you may choose to volunteer for helping with quilt show. 
Upcoming Events:
Jean Potter’s class – May 18th 10-4 – Mary Hertel – Paper Piece class with Christmas theme
Bus Trip – June 23rd – Barn Quilts in the Lindstrom, Center City area – Bridget’s Mom or Sister will be driving a bus for us – Meet at the St. Croix Cty Parking lot across from Aldi’s in New Richmond at 8 am – lunch and possible shopping – Arrive back to New Richmond approximately 4 pm – Need to confirm the number of people going in May
St. Croix County Fair Entries – due May 31, 2018

Note next Month’s meeting is moved back a week.  The meeting evening is May 17th, 2018 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in New Richmond.  The meeting is at 6 pm and it is a potluck event.  There will be a paper piecing lecture by Mary Hertel from Made by Marney starting at 6:30pm.  Please note Mary will accept cash or checks but no credit cards for any purchases.
